Reel Candy Fishing Methods

Professional Kite Fishing

Kite fishing is nothing new to the Reel Candy Team. Although the Chinese and Polynesian people claim credit for using kites to catch fish centuries ago, the Reel Candy has been using kites in pursuit of sailfish for over 20 years in Palm Beach, Jupiter, Stuart, and the Gulf of Mexico; beginning with the legendary Bob Lewis in Marathon, Florida. Since then, we have caught numerous sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi (aka dolphin & dorado), sharks, kingfish, wahoo, tunas, jacks, just to name a few species.

A Palm Beach, Florida charter fishing trip can be an experience to enjoy year after year when kite fishing. It’s FUN and EXCITING to see a fish exploding on a live bait dangling under a kite. Best of all YOU can be in control and hook your own fish! Our experienced team will guide you through the hook up and the fight of a jumping sailfish.

We use Daiwa Tanacom 1000 & Kristal Electric kite reels courtesy of Bluewater Power Reels. Our kites consist of several different styles depending on the wind conditions. Carefully handled live bait is either caught by our clients or purchased from one of the local vendors.

Trolling

Trolling is a method of fishing where one or more fishing lines, baited with lures or bait fish, are drawn through the water. This may be behind a moving boat, or by slowly winding the line in when fishing from a static position, or even sweeping the line from side-to-side, e.g. when fishing from a jetty. Multiple lines are often used, and outriggers can be used to spread the lines more widely and reduce their chances of

tangling. Downriggers can also be used to keep the lures or baits trailing at a desired

 depth.

Trolling is used to catch many pelagic fish found in our waters such as marlin, mackerel and tuna.

Trolling can be phonetically confused with trawling, a different method of fishing where a net (trawl) is drawn through the water instead of lines. Trolling is used both for recreational and commercial fishing whereas trawling is used mainly for commercial fishing.

Our crew’s expertise is unparalleled. With over 40 years of experience in trolling all over the globe, USCG Licensed Master Captain John Bobnar and his crew have caught numerous sailfish, marlin, mahi-mahi, sharks, kingfish, wahoo, tunas, and jacks to name a few species.. We employ various trolling methods to target different species. For high-speed trolling, we target wahoo using specialized lures and techniques to entice these fast predators. When raising sailfish or big marlin, we use bait and switch teaser fishing, a method that involves attracting the fish with teasers and then presenting the bait for the strike. For wahoo and mackerel, we also use slow planer fishing, which involves trolling at slower speeds with planers to get the bait down to the desired depth.

We troll for an impressive array of species, from giant blue marlin and sailfish to bonita, tuna, mahi, wahoo, and mackerel. Each trip is tailored to your preferences, ensuring you have the best chance of landing the fish of your dreams. Join us on Reel Candy for a thrilling and memorable fishing experience that you’ll cherish for years to come.

Live Baiting

Dependent on the time of the year and water temperatures live bait can be a preferred choice for a successful catch. Throughout the year and changing migrations we implement a variety of live bait depending on the species we are targeting and the availability of bait fish in our local waters. Some live baitfish species we commonly use for kite fishing and pitching include locally caught sardines, threadfin herring, goggle eyes, blue runners, jacks, cigar minnows and pilchard. Larger live baits like bonita and mackerel are often used in pursuit of larger species such as marlin, wahoo, tuna and shark. The bait you choose has everything to do with the fish you are targeting. Tuna Fishing

Come join us this Tuna Season!! Tuna can be present all year round in our waters, therefore the opportunity to catch them exists on any given day. Our “prime time” for Tuna fishing typically begins end of March – early April and we are always looking for the birds to help us in our quest. Mahi Mahi, commonly referred to as ‘Dolphin’ or ‘Dorado’ in Florida, are hunted by tuna, therefore can also be found while trolling for Yellowfin or Blackfin Tuna. It’s also an excellent time to encounter White and Blue Marlin. The Tuna run will usually last well into September where Yellowfin Tuna average around 40 lbs with the occasional encounter of MUCH larger fish. Pound for pound, Tuna fight extremely hard, nonetheless being a very tasty reward.

Dolphin a.k.a Dorado a.k.a Mahi Mahi

The Mahi are epipelagic fish, spending most of their time offshore and relatively near the surface. They range from anywhere between 5 lb’s and 70 lb’s and are known to dive to depths nearing 1000ft, although more commonly are found in the 100ft nearest to the surface. They usually don’t normally start to migrate further south until the cooler water temperature comes.
Stuart, is known as The Sailfish Capital of the World. When you head south it’s waters create the famed “Sailfish Alley” here in Jupiter and Palm Beach. During Sailfish Season you can easily have multiple hook ups and reap the rewards.
