The larger fish usually start showing in April and their migration route takes them north and last until June. Anglers from all over the world come to Jupiter, Florida just to catch sailfish on the Reel Candy. The season usually runs from November through February and can even last into April. However sails can be caught here during every month of the year. During the winter as cold fronts come down from the north. The sailfish chase the balls of baitfish, which are migrating south. Double digit strikes and often double digit releases of sailfish in one day are not uncommon if the conditions are right.
Sailfishing over the last 10 years has improved tremendously since the inception and use of circle hooks. The Reel Candy fishing team releases ALL billfish. If the sailfish you catch is your first, and you would like to have it mounted, we will measure it, release it, and arrange for a replica to be made of your trophy by a trusted taxidermist.
Although our preferred method to catch sails is with the use of a kite, we often find trolling will produce more bites. We use 20 weight tackle and depending on conditions will fish between 4 to 6 rods. To entice a bite, we will “dredge fish”, pulling as many as 36 or more finely prepared baits on each side of the boat. The dredge is trolled just below the surface, with a hooked dead bait following close behind. The purpose of the dredge is to mimic a school of bait fish. It is not uncommon to have multiple sailfish attack our teaser. Our mates on the Reel Candy will assist and guide you through the hook up, the fight, and the photo session of your fish for ……Memories of a lifetime.

From the Jupiter Inlet, where the Reel Candy is docked, we only have a short 2 mile run to start fishing. The “Smoker Kings” predominately follow the baitfish to Jupiter waters in January and February. Since the larger Kingfish are less inhibited at night hitting our top drifting baits especially around a full moon we can customize any trip. Day time slow trolling, drifting or live bait kite-fishing will produce 20 pound average Kingfish though it is not uncommon to catch fish larger than 40 pounds. The winter Kingfish schools are much larger and highly concentrated, that’s when the bite is exciting and “super” hot! Kingfish are hard hitting and make drag screaming runs. It is not uncommon to have the kings skyrocketing out of the water, guzzling the bait while in mid-air.
Full or half day fishing charters are available on both the 47′ Reel Candy or the 26′ Reel Candy II. Book your Reel Candy Fishing Charter.
On the Reel Candy our swordfishing tactics off Jupiter, consist of drift fishing live or dead baits or a combination of live and dead baits. Although large carefully rigged dead squid is the preferred bait, we often use large blue runners, mackerel, or our sailfish favorite goggle eyes. Sometimes the wait is only a few minutes, other times the night drags into morning, but you stand an excellent chance of hooking or catching your swordfish on the Reel Candy on any given night of the year.
Many anglers, captains and fishing magazines have voted the swordfish as the toughest adversary to be encountered on rod and reel.
Imagine a fish hooked 400 feet deep, jump in the moonlight and then only seconds later takes your screaming reel down 500 feet. Your fight starts all over again!
In Jupiter, Florida, we have a year round swordfish season and our swordfish grounds are on the average only 20 miles from the Jupiter Inlet, where the Reel Candy Sportfish is docked at the Square Grouper Tiki Bar & Castaway’s Marina.
We do catch some swordfish that are small, but some are in excess of 500 pounds. We always encourage conservation and a healthy release. A 100 pound fish can be quite a battle on 50 pound class tackle. It is not uncommon for Reel Candy anglers to hook a swordfish and fight them for a couple hours.

Using our sponsored Kristal Electric Reels laded with braided line, coupled with heavy weights to reach depths of 2000 feet, we are able to get a bait to the bottom and using the boat keep the bait on or close to the bottom. The swordfish that we have caught during the day are typically larger than your nighttime swords.
Several magazines have featured the angling successes of the Reel Candy Charter fishing crew, including a tournament recap and swordfish article in Marine Max’s Lifestyle Publication and their sponsored World Billfish Tournament.

Black Marlin, Blue Marling and Whie Marlin! Marlin are the most sought-after marlin species today, partly because of their wide distribution, which makes them available to a great number of anglers, and but mostly because they are capable of spectacular fighting ability and having the potential to reach great sizes. The pursuit of marlin has inspired and continues to inspire thousands of sport fishermen.

The pursuit of blue marlin has inspired and continues to inspire thousands of sport fishermen.
White marlin are distributed throughout the tropical and seasonally in temperate oceanic waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The smallest of the marlin species, with a potential maximum size of around 220 lb (100 kg), they are sought after not for their size but for their speed, leaping ability, elegant beauty and the difficulty that anglers often encounter in baiting and hooking them. They are a premier light-tackle gamefish.
The “hatchet marlin”, long thought to be a variant of the white marlin distinguished by dorsal and anal fins with a chopped-off rather than rounded appearance, has recently been confirmed as a separate species in the Tetrapturus family, the roundscale spearfish. Nearly indistinguishable from white marlin, most tournaments treat hatchet marlin catches as white marlin. Both species are fished for in the same way.
White marlin feed on a variety of schooling baitfish including sardine, herring and other clupeoids; squid; mackerel; scad; saury; and smaller tuna-like fishes such as frigate and bullet tuna. Like their close relatives the striped marlin, and sailfish, white marlin will often group together to corral schooling baitfish into a tight group for feeding purposes, a phenomenon commonly referred to as “balling bait”. When this occurs, it is common for two or more fish to be raised to the baits or hooked up simultaneously.
Genetically compared to striped/white marlins and sailfish, black marlins are more solid than their blue counterparts. They have a shorter bill and a rounder and lower dorsal fin. They are also the only marlin from the family to have rigid pectoral fins that are unable to be pressed flat against their immense bodies.
